Biography:
Felipe Lopez is a Multi-Dimensional self-taught visual artist based in Houston, Texas. Born in New York, Lopez's career began with his mixed media drawings & paintings. In 2013, Felipe's work was included in: the Exposure photography exhibition in Long Island City, NY and the African American Artist Exhibition at the MFAH. His first solo exhibition took place in 2014 at the HAA Gallery entitled Constructing the Praxis of Interactivity.
In December 2014, Felipe exhibited work at Art Miami. 2015 brought work shown at the African American Artist Exhibition at the MFAH, Houston Fine Art Fair, and the Texas Contemporary Art Fair. Combining the trade of welding along with his skills in visual art, Lopez developed his Hook series into sculpture, mixed media, and painting. His work was featured by Cindy Lisica at Revision Space in Pittsburgh, PA in April.
In the Fall of 2016, Felipe was selected as an Artist INC Artist Facilitators thru Fresh Arts and completed his mentorship program in 2016. Felipe’s latest Lightbulb series was also a major success at the show Natural Flexibility at Cindy Lisica Gallery in the spring of 2017. His work was featured in the gallery's group show Fine Wind, Clear Morning for PrintHouston 2017 along with work in the Aspen Art Fair.
The end of 2017 took the concept of his lightbulb series further, through mixed media work in the bulbs with Ambiente and large sculptural pieces with Ambiente Chandelier. Both of these series were featured at Scope Miami 2017 through Asterisk Projects. May 2018 brought his largest solo exhibition to date entitled Ambiente Amore at Clarke & Associates with some of the work being shown in a group exhibition entitled Texas Eclectics in Greece in September 2018.
To start 2019, Mayor Sylvester Turner and the City of Houston approved Houston Arts Alliance recommendation to award Lopez a Support for Artists and Creative Individuals grant which hasl help fund his largest bulb work. Early 2019 also brought another major solo exhibition entitled The Liquidity of a Right with Forma 110 with another solo exhibition in May at Deborah Colton Gallery The Want In My Nature. Felipe was also selected to be on the city wide committee for Disaster Relief with Houston Arts Alliance and the City of Houston. Lopez was also the resident artist at AFA for the high school composers project with Ambient Avenues, creating original video for student compositions.
To round out 2019, Lopez will be involved in three major projects within the city. The first is a two silo installation as part of Sculpture Month Houston featuring his new Pendant series along with video work. The second is the Silent Exclamation video series curated and including work from Lopez for the inaugural Houston edition of the stARTup Art Fair, along with exhibiting at the fair. Thirdly, Lopez and his wife are a part of the production team for music and visuals for the theatrical debut of Saving Susannah debuting at MATCH in October.
