As of 6 a.m. on Monday morning in Australia, a total of 136 fires were burning across the state of New South Wales, with 69 uncontained, according to the state's Rural Fire Service. Australia burned so hot that they created their own thunderstorms and lightning—similar to conditions during a volcanic eruption or atomic bomb blast. It is estimated that 500 million mammals, birds and reptiles have been affected in the state of New South Wales since September. The death toll from the fires, now in their fifth month, has risen to 25. 1000’s more are still missing.
The loss of life, the lack of water, the destruction. It’s only through our awareness, our actions, and our movement that we can attempt to alleviate the devastation Australia is facing and in the long term. We can learn to relearn and conserve to protect life and our natural resources in times of rapid change and the increasing intensity of natural disasters.
