About

How I Got Started

Felipe Lopez is a Colombian sculptor based in Tampa, Florida, recognized for creating contemporary metal sculptures that merge artistic expression with industrial precision. Working primarily with recycled materials, his practice transforms discarded elements into museum-quality works that explore sustainability, cultural identity, and material transformation.

Raised in Cali, Colombia, Felipe developed his artistic foundation within a deeply creative environment influenced by his father, a visual artist, and his mother, a jewelry artisan. This early exposure shaped his sensitivity to craftsmanship, composition, and narrative. Although he pursued formal studies in design, his artistic path evolved into a largely self-directed practice, refined over more than 15 years of hands-on experience working with metal.

His work is defined by an intuitive and material-driven process. Rather than imposing fixed concepts, Felipe engages in a dialogue with the material—allowing its structure, history, and physical properties to guide the composition. This approach aligns with a broader understanding of sustainability, where materials are not treated as waste, but as carriers of memory and transformation, a philosophy deeply connected to contemporary discourse in art and material culture.

Felipe’s sculptures integrate artistic vision with advanced fabrication techniques, balancing conceptual depth with structural integrity, durability, and engineering precision. His work reflects a convergence between art and industrial processes, positioning his practice within a space where aesthetics, technical execution, and long-term material performance coexist.

Since relocating to the United States in 2019, Felipe has expanded his presence within the contemporary art scene in Florida, participating in exhibitions such as the Gasparilla Festival of the Arts and museum shows including Artifacts of Transformation at the Ormond Memorial Art Museum. His work also extends into collaborative and large-scale sculptural projects, supported by high-level fabrication infrastructure.

Felipe serves as the Director of Art at Modern Art Creations, a contemporary gallery and curatorial platform developed in collaboration with a full-scale fabrication facility. Within this role, he leads the artistic vision of the gallery, oversees the production of original works, and contributes to the integration of art, engineering, and sustainability as a unified practice. The gallery operates beyond the traditional exhibition model, functioning as both a production environment and a curatorial space dedicated to collectors, institutions, and design professionals.

Through his work, Felipe Lopez seeks to redefine the relationship between material, value, and permanence. His sculptures are not only aesthetic objects but also statements on transformation—bridging the gap between what has been discarded and what can endure as cultural legacy. His long-term vision is to expand into large-scale public art and international exhibitions, establishing a lasting presence within the global contemporary art landscape.
